Episode 4: Raising Servant Leaders
Introduction
Welcome to Episode 4 of the Mom2Mom Leadership podcast.
The episode focuses on raising servant leaders. We asked our community for their definitions of servant leadership and we discuss several definitions throughout the episode. The show begins with a definition of servant leadership by Eric, followed by the definition of servant leadership by Robert Greenleaf, who coined the phrase. "The servant-leader is a servant first."
1. What it means to be a servant leader
Think about what YOUR definition of servant leadership is.
In our daily lives, we lead obvious people, such as our children, spouse, teams at work, and ourselves, but do we think about the less obvious people, like the people we see at the grocery story or the Amazon driver. There is a lot of power in a smile.
2. Benefits of having a servant Leader Mindset
A Harvard Business Review study showed a 20% increase in employee satisfaction for organizations with servant leaders. Benefits of having a servant leader mindset include increased employee engagement, improved collaboration, and higher retention rates.
3. Characteristics of a Servant Leader
Keslie, a teacher, shared qualities of a servant leader that are important to her.
Attributes include valuing opinions, knowing individuals personally, setting high standards, promoting confidence, active listening, confidentiality, encouraging different perspectives, making individuals feel important, and being a teacher and friend.
4. Ways moms can create a culture of servant leadership within the family
Practical tips include leading by example, encouraging open communication, teaching empathy, involving children in decision-making, practicing gratitude, volunteering together, and supporting each other's passions.
In this part of the episode, we heard servant leader definitions from Ashley and her daughter Harper, Jamie, Rachel, and Elisa.
Thank you to all of our listeners who offered their definitions of servant leadership. The final definition came from Elena.
Call to Action: Reflect on the individual needs of those you serve, and remember the power of a smile.
